How to Run Internal AI Safely

You don't. At least, that is the answer most CIOs and CISOs will give you.

Rocket launching into a starry night sky

You don't. At least, that is the answer most CIOs and CISOs will give you.

The proposition currently presented to companies is just awful. You can achieve the promise of AI acceleration, but you do so at the cost of information security. What a terrible choice: keep your proprietary data completely private but fall behind competitors, or throw caution to the wind. Let employees pump proprietary know-how into a frontier model, and cross your fingers that it doesn't become common knowledge.

Run private? That is, run the model totally in-house? Most CIOs will quietly admit they don't know what they don't know. These models are "cool" and performant, but they seem like an awfully big black box. Let's address the fear head-on: What if the AI is embedded with trojans or malware? What if there is some sleeping giant gotcha tucked neatly in a massive file, waiting to take the network down? Any seasoned CIO is going to look at it with a raised eyebrow that clearly indicates: Tread lightly. I'm not going to gamble my career on an exploding black box.

A Simple Beginning

We proceed with a simple premise: knowing how to run AI is a core skill every company needs to possess. Teams need pure, self-built internal knowledge of how to evaluate, challenge, and run an AI.

In 1936, a group of young adults at Caltech started playing around with rockets. It was insanely dangerous. They literally called themselves the "Suicide Squad." Rather than killing their experiments entirely, Caltech said to them, "We love you guys, and we love what you are doing. But we'd love you more out in the middle of the desert."

So, that is what they did. They moved the team out to the Arroyo Seco desert. That group evolved into the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), an organization that helped define American space exploration.

Companies have to know how to run AI. It's not going away. Teams need a place to figure out what they don't know. And it all begins in the digital desert.

What We Deliver: The Zero-Trust Desert

What we bring to the table is a platform that allows you to control this desert experimentation. Bring nothing into your house until you have established the trust and safety procedures you are completely happy with. We provide a least-privilege environment restricted exclusively to your employees. Nothing is shared. There is no exposure to outside experiments.

It is a Blockhouse sandbox built to contain, scan, attest, poke, prod, cajole, threaten, and work over the AI before it ever touches your real network.

Here is how we build the cage:

Scan: We start with the basics. We aggressively scan the models for known vulnerabilities. There is already a textbook's worth of ways these systems can be compromised, and we check for them before the engine ever turns on.

Contain (The Blockhouse sandbox): Do we mean an air gap? Yes, you can have an air gap. But true containment is bigger than just pulling the ethernet cable. We call it the Blockhouse sandbox. It is a kernel-level operating system box where the AI is locked inside. Any misbehavior, and the AI is instantly halted. Tries to escalate privileges? Halted. Tries to alter read-only data? Halted. Tries to communicate outside a monitored channel? Halted. Because LLMs are inherently chat-based, all communication is forced through a single, strictly monitored choke point we call the Porthole.

Stress Test: Your team needs a safe place to build experiments. You need to push these models to their breaking point. This environment allows your engineers to stress the AI in a variety of different ways to see exactly how it behaves when the pressure is on, without risking corporate infrastructure.

Run Many Models: We believe the future of enterprise AI isn't just massive, monolithic systems. There is a bright future for small, highly focused models. Countless internal corporate processes can be tackled by specialized, smaller AIs. You simply don't need a massive frontier model for everything. After all, does your internal HR assistant really need to know the world's greatest sourdough bread recipe? No. The desert is a place to run, test, and swap out as many of these focused, lightweight models as you like.
